Urban Legend: your self-paced online course for a powerful mixed-media collage (video course)

More than a collage: the mixed-media collage. Because you don’t just use and glue paper. You also work with additional materials.

For Urban Legend, these are: acrylic paints, spray paint and resin.

Stefanie creates the mixed-media collage for you to follow along with – if you like. This self-paced online course shows you exactly how to do it. Or you can bring your own idea to life and simply apply the steps from this course to your own artwork.

What matters when creating your Urban Legend mixed-media collage – the theory in the video course

What matters with every collage, whether traditional or mixed media: the composition, the theme. You don’t simply start placing things at random. Instead, you coordinate everything with your theme and give the individual elements the right visual weight. This is especially important when gluing paper. Test and rearrange first – then make it permanent.

You have a focal point in your collage and arrange everything else around it. A mixed-media collage allows you to create accents and contrasts using additional materials. At the same time, these materials help you connect all the elements and create a cohesive overall artwork from individual pieces. In this case: your urban mixed-media collage.

What to expect in the Urban Legend video course – your practical work

• Define your theme: It’s up to you. You can recreate the example artwork from this self-paced course or choose your own theme. (Here, everything is explained in relation to Stefanie’s artwork. You can apply the steps to your own idea if you like.)
• Choose your papers: Here’s what’s important when selecting papers for your artwork.
• Choose your painting surface: Keep these points in mind if you also want to work with resin.
• Select sections, tear papers: Which sections of a sheet of paper can you use? Plus: paper can be torn in different ways – with different results and different effects.
• Arrange the elements: Keep these points in mind when composing your artwork.
• Glue the papers: This is how and what you use to glue your papers securely. Unless you want air bubbles or creases?
• Extra tip: You don’t have to use just one type of paper in your artwork.
• Priming: Why you should consider the colour of your painting surface before you get started.
• Add accents, create connections, tone down or emphasise elements: This is where the additional materials come into play. You’ll learn how and where to apply colour to your collage using a brush and spray paint.
• Working with torn edges: This depends on the effect you want to achieve. See above.
• Edges of the painting surface: Leave them as they are or add colour? Stefanie explains her perspective.
• Prepare the painting surface for resin: Work first, pleasure later. Although the work really isn’t that much work …
• Resin: Here, you’ll see and learn three things at once. You’ll learn about laminating the papers, the different ways you can incorporate clear and/or coloured resin into your design, and the formula that tells you how much resin you’ll need.
• Finishing touches: Bubbles in the resin? You can easily remove them before it cures. And while it’s curing, … You’ll find out what to do in the video.

Yes, there are a few things to keep in mind. But they’ll come easily to you if you follow the video course carefully. You can also watch it several times if you want to deepen your new knowledge.

Because we know from many live workshops: More knowledge leads to more creativity and more confidence when creating art. The same applies to your Urban Style mixed-media collage.
